Page under construction…this will be where I post my “Access Fitness Project” for my Community & Therapeutic Recreation independent study project comparing three different fitness facilities in my area (campus, nonprofit, & for-profit). Project contains photos of both good and bad things in regards to accessibiilty at these facilities (as well as photo descriptions). I will also be showing how these facilities rate in regards to the AIMFREE (Accessibility Instruments Measuring Fitness & Recreation Environments).
As a sport & physical activity sociologist, space is a very important structure in people’s lived experiences. Physical structures demonstrate whether our bodies are welcomed in a space and tell us how our bodies are “supposed” to move within those parameters. This is why disability activists & scholars talk about Universal Design, a way of making sure that access is addressed multidimensionally. in a variety of contexts, for example in education and in construction of buildings.
